PREMIER LEAGUE · WORKLOAD & RECOVERY
Europe, rest & results.
The team after Europe. Its next opponent. The value of an extra day.
Does Europe hurt the team playing in it?
Only the European team’s league games within five days of Europe.
No clear league penalty after Europe in this sample.
322 matched games · same club, season and venue
95% resampling range -0.21 to +0.09 pts/game; 0 means no difference. “Usual” allows for pre-match team and opponent strength, plus that club’s normal over/underperformance. Association, not a proven causal effect.
A dash means no matched pre-match comparison is available, not no impact. Games shows matched / recorded where coverage differs.
Total points = the measured gap across these games, not a projected 38-game penalty. Usual pts and Won use only those same matched games.
How the comparisons work
We compare actual points minus chronological pre-match expected points within each club, season and home/away setting. That club’s other relevant league games provide its normal return. This helps separate Europe or rest from team strength and a generally good or bad season; it does not control every squad, rotation, travel or injury difference.
For the receiving-opponent view, the opponent’s European game is joined to the same league fixture, not inferred by reversing a points gap. The receiving team had no European game in the preceding five days; that does not guarantee a cup-free week. The rest view requires complete calendars for both sides.
Only matched games with stored pre-match expectations enter the bars. Current-season and earliest-season comparisons can be unavailable. The 95% range resamples club-seasons; both teams’ match results remain related. These findings do not change the forecast model.
